Kansas is taking actions toward permitting much more farmers to develop hemp for industrial use beneath a measure Gov. Laura Kelly signed into law Monday.

The law requires impact later this month and replaces a state system for researching hemp with a system that makes it possible for industrial production.

Lawmakers authorized the analysis system final year immediately after the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill.

The law calls for the Kansas Division of Agriculture to submit a strategy to the federal government for regulating industrial hemp production.

The division is needed to confer with the governor and lawyer basic ahead of submitting the strategy.

Kelly mentioned in a statement that the law will support the state’s agricultural economy by providing farmers a different crop to develop.
