“For 50 years we’ve waged the war on drugs with quite poor outcomes.”

He also spoke about increasing up close to the U.S.-Mexico border and “seeing narco culture all about me.”

“At a young age I realized how major an enterprise that was,” Martinez mentioned, referring to drug cartels that would stand to drop income when the marijuana industry is legal and regulated.

Maestas mentioned that the state-run retailers in the compromise bill may well be the “most accountable way” for regulating marijuana sales that has however been attempted in the U.S.

“Folks have been waiting 82 year for this vote,” Maestas added. “Prohibition does not perform. We should prosecute the war against drugs differently than we are now.”

“Let’s finish 82 years of a crime that must have by no means been on the books.”

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) championed marijuana legalization throughout her gubernatorial campaign final year and would most likely sign the bill if it is passed by the Senate.

On Tuesday, that chamber passed a separate bill to decriminalize low-level cannabis possession and on Thursday authorized legislation to expand the state’s healthcare cannabis law.
