SAN FRANCISCO

San Francisco Removes Much more Than eight,000 Marijuana-Associated Crimes From People’s Records

More than eight,000 marijuana-connected convictions have been erased or decreased employing a technological method that prosecutors nationwide must adopt to address a developing backlog of criminal circumstances eligible for modification, San Francisco’s district lawyer announced Monday.

San Francisco is the initial California county to announce complete compliance with the state’s broad legalization of marijuana that also produced an estimated 200,000 previous pot convictions eligible for erasure or reduction.

San Francisco District Lawyer George Gascon credited the nonprofit technologies organization Code for America for solving the greatest hurdle to identifying eligible circumstances dating back decades.

When voters passed Proposition 64 in 2016 to enable adult use of marijuana, they also eliminated a number of pot-connected crimes. The proposition also applied retroactively, but offered no mechanism or guidance on how these eligible could erase their convictions or have felonies decreased to misdemeanors.
