With hundreds illegal marijuana shops continuing to operate in Los Angeles, a City Council committee Friday will take into consideration a new tactic aimed at cracking down on the enterprises by obtaining their water and energy utility lines reduce off.
The thought of shutting off utilities at illegal shops was proposed final year by Councilwomen Nury Martinez and Monica Rodriguez in a motion directing city employees report on the viability of implementing an ordinance that enables the city to disconnect or shut off utility service to unlicensed pot enterprises.
A current report from the Workplace of Chief Legislative Analyst set to be discussed by the Guidelines, Elections and Intergovernmental Relations Committee recommends the City Council draft the ordinance, which would authorize the Los Angeles Division of Water and Energy to disconnect utilities at a service address if the Division of Cannabis Regulation supplies written confirmation that the address in query does not have a license to engage in industrial cannabis activity, and the Los Angeles Police Division or yet another city division supplies written confirmation to the LADWP that industrial cannabis activity is occurring at an address.
