A time consuming process but 1 that has to be performed, is figuring out the males from the females when you are developing from normal seed. We’ve been developing weed for more than 40 years and nevertheless cannot inform a female from a male till they flower for a week or two.
IMO-developing from normal seed is improved than applying feminized or auto flowering seeds. Normal seed will give you a bigger, far more robust plant that you can simply clone.
Several growers can inform, or at least claim they can spot a girl from a boy and there are several articles and videos about it, but we cannot figure it out. So we’re stuck when we develop from seed, we have to enable seedlings to develop for awhile in the vegetative cycle than start out flowering them (switch from 18 hours of light to 12 hours of light) so we can figure out who’s who.
Immediately after you switch your lighting schedule to 12/12 to inform a male from a female, appear for tiny balls (male plants) that start out to kind and get rid of these plants, (we do save 1 to pollinate 1 female for seeds). Occasionally the tiny balls start out forming in a couple of days and in some cases it requires a week or two.
As soon as we have our girls (they have white wispy hairs/no tiny balls) figured out, we alter the flowering light cycle back to the vegetative cycle. We start out with 24 hours light for about 10 days then switch to the GLR.
You will notice weird searching single leafs developing up via the tiny buds. Do not be concerned about them, just choose them off if they make you nervous or leave them.
Immediately after 10 days of 24 on, we alter back to our regular veg lighting schedule, we use the GLR (Gas Light Routine) for the remaining time in the veg cycle (now you can see why clones are so significantly improved to start out with).
Even even though the plants initially appear a tiny weird, they develop out into regular searching plants in a brief though. As soon as you have a group of female plants developing in the vegetative cycle, you can start out taking clones when the reduced branches get to be about 3″ lengthy or so.
All in all it can take about three weeks to differentiate the boys from the girls so it tends to make a lot of sense to maintain a mother plant developing so you can take female clones anytime you will need them.
